Meeting of the Scientific Circle "Innovative Technologies for Teaching Geography"
The event brought together students interested in the modernization of the educational process.
The main event was a report by Svitlana Bogaslavska, a master's student majoring in Secondary Education (Geography). Svitlana presented the results of her research on a topic relevant to all teachers: "Formative and criterion-based assessment in geography lessons."
The speaker not only revealed the theoretical foundations of these types of assessment, but also shared her own practical experience in developing detailed criteria for formative assessment of students' activities for various types of educational work (working with a map, analyzing statistical data, project activities, etc.).
The participants of the group actively participated in the discussion, focusing on practical issues and challenges of implementing formative and criterion-based assessment in the real educational process in geography lessons. The following issues were raised: teacher's time spent on developing criteria; involving students in this process; ways to reduce the teacher's workload.
In conclusion, it was clearly noted that formative assessment (assessment for learning) is not just about recording the result, but about supporting and managing the learning process. It helps students to understand their strengths and weaknesses, adjust their learning trajectory in time, and improve their results before the final assessment.
This was an extremely useful and relevant event that highlighted the importance of innovative approaches to assessment for improving the quality of geographical education!
We thank Svitlana Bogaslavska for her informative report and active participation of all those present!
